“The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is the only agreed upon mechanism of cooperation in the Nile
Basin. In 1999 we have agreed on a common vision and procedures for cooperation.
Sudan froze its activities in NBI in June 2010 during the Addis Ababa meeting but returned in
early 2012 based on the strong commitment of the country for cooperation and the benefits
accrued to Sudan by being part of the Nile Basin fraternity. These include; participation in
shaping the future of the Nile Basin (technical and political) as well as in the Nile Basin strategic
and joint-planning (incorporate Sudan interests) and can also influence the Nile Basin
investment pipeline.
Furthermore, Sudan would like to work together with Nile Basin countries to achieve benefits
from the Nile (Hydro, Irrigation, Domestic use, Industry, Navigation, fishery, tourism etc.), for
the Nile (Environment, ecology, aquatic life, etc.) and beyond the Nile (political, economic,
trade, security, Economic integration would create interdependency).”#MyNileStory
